What are gumboots?

To protect the feet and legs from mud and water, gumboots are waterproof boots made of rubber or other waterproof materials. They are tall, reaching the calf or knee, and frequently have a non-slip sole for better traction.

Gumboots in Safety

Gumboots are frequently employed as personal protection equipment (PPE) in the interest of safety in settings where workers are exposed to dangerous or damp situations. They can guard the legs and feet against a variety of dangers like chemicals, sharp objects, and electrical dangers. For increased comfort and safety, safety gumboots may also come with extra features including reinforced toes, anti-static capabilities, and slip-resistant bottoms.

Industries employing Gumboots:

1. Agriculture: Employees in the agriculture sector are frequently exposed to muddy and damp circumstances as well as possible dangers including pesticides and sharp objects.
2. Construction: Due to sharp debris, damp environments, and other possible risks, construction sites can be dangerous.

Oil and gas: Workers in the oil and gas industry may work in wet and muddy conditions and require boots with anti-static properties and resistance to chemicals.

Indian Standards for gumboots

IS 15298 for safety gumboots has been established by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Gumboots used as personal protection equipment in sectors like mining, construction, and agriculture must meet specifications outlined in IS 15298. Safety gumboot producers in India are required to adhere to the standard, which is often required by industries to guarantee employee safety.

However, IS 5557:2004, a standard for gumboots composed of rubber or plastic, does not particularly cover the specifications for safety gumboots used as PPE.
